Preparing for a Successful Cake Smash Session

Cake smash sessions are an excellent way to celebrate your child's birthday while capturing some adorable moments.  Sessions are generally booked no more than two weeks prior their birthday.  While the studio is stocked with many props and accessories, you will need to bring your cake and balloons; unless purchasing through me.

THE CAKE

The cake is the second most important part of the session.  Please make sure you have a proper smash cake for photographing.  Giant cupcakes or small 4-6" cakes photograph best.  Also, it is important to remember that baby will be smashing the cake into a thousand pieces, fondant is pretty, but it is not easy to eat with your fingers; a classic buttercream frosting is best.  If you refrigerate the cake before the session, please allow plenty of time for the cake to soften and warm to room temperature (I recommend keeping the cake in a cool dark place rather than the fridge).

THE OUTFIT

We will begin your child’s session with a few non-cake smashing poses. I have plenty of outfits aside from the smash outfit to choose from.

BALLOONS AND SET

The balloons are the clients responsibly. You will need 6 in the colours of your choice. I would recommend calling Party City Ancaster (closest to my house) a head of time so that they are ready for pick up on your way to the session.

If you have questions about colour selection/colour names please email me:

THEMES AND COLOURS

I love a good theme! If there is a certain theme you would like, please let me know in advance, so I can do what I can to accommodate.

THE DAY OF

For many babies, this may be their first time eating cake.  Don’t be alarmed if baby doesn’t tear away at the frosting immediately.  Some babies eat neatly, while others face dive and some hate the cake all together.  Some babies need a little assistance from mom or dad to figure out what to do.  It’s all a process and one that should be exciting and fun for both of you.

* I would suggest Introducing baby to cake or a cupcake twice the week of your session so he/she will be comfortable during the smash session. This is very important!

THE MESS

Giving a cake to a baby does create a mess.  Please make sure to bring LOTS AND LOTS of wipes.  And, a change of clothes, too.

NAP TIME

Please be sure to schedule your cake smash around your baby’s nap time.  Rested babies are happy babies.
